Shah Rukh Khan Profile:
This Delhi boy has certainly come a long way from his television days. Shah Rukh first entered the limelight with his role as Abhimanyu in the tele serial Fauji, followed by Circus which portrayed the life of circus performers. He made his movie debut in 1992 with Deewana. However, he shot to stardom with his two successive negative roles as a paranoid lover in Baazigar and Darr in 1993.
1995 proved to be a defining year in his career with Yash Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. He followed Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge with a string of successful love stories, including Pardes and Dil To Pagal Hai, becoming the quintessential romantic hero. Though he is known to share great onscreen chemistry with all his heroines, the way he and Kajol light up the screen together has no present day parallel in Indian cinema.
Movies like Chahat, Duplicate and Dil Se didn’t do too well at the box office, but they didn’t make a dent in his career either. Dil Se did not set the box office cash registers ringing, but the song Chaiya Chaiya in which Shah Rukh danced with Malaika Arora Khan on top of a train became a rage.
Then came Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Not only was the movie a colossal hit, it set the course for a long and successful association between Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar. Together, the two went on to give bigger hits with Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho and My Name Is Khan.
Today, Shah Rukh has worked with every big director in the country. From period eponymous roles like in Asoka to that of a doomed hero inSanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas, Shah Rukh has constantly reinvented himself over the years.
In 2004, Shah Rukh was seen romancing Sushmita Sen as Major Ram Prasad Sharma in Farah Khan’s Main Hoon Na. Towards the end of the year came Ashutosh Gowariker’s Swades, where Shah Rukh’s understated performance as Mohan Bhargava won him a Filmfare award for ‘Best Actor’ in 2005. That same year, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.
Taking national repute to another level, Amol Palekar’s Paheli, where Shah Rukh plays the friendly ‘ghost’ was picked as the official entry from India for the Oscars (79th Academy Awards). Shah Rukh’s other notable releases in 2006 include Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and Farhan Akhtar’s Don.
Chak De India proved to be a turning point in his career and the Shah Rukh Khan magic got a boost with Om Shanti Om ,wherein he paired up with debutante Deepika Padukone. Khan also showed up in a series of special appearances: Heyy Babyy, Krazzy 4, Bhoothnath, Luck By Chanceand Dulha Mil Gaya, apart from turning narrator for Aao Wish Karein.
Shah Rukh Khan’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008) was a winner at the box office and helped to soar his star ratings further. Billu in 2009, directed by Priyadarshan, didn’t exactly rake in the moolah. Though, what followed later could mildly be described as cinematic history.
Shah Rukh Khan’s 2010 release My Name Is Khan, co produced by Dharma Productions and Red Chillies Entertainment, proved to be a stupendous global success, earning lavish praise from the international Press and smashing all records. Having braved the Shiv Sena opposition for his ‘Khan’ film, SRK scored on the personal front, as well.
Shah Rukh recently produced Always Kabhi Kabhi and his latest release RA.One, a Sci-fi super hero flick, has been declared a blockbuster hit and saw a record 70-100% occupancy levels all over India.
His next film Don 2, directed by Farhan Akhtar, also did good business in India and overseas. His team, Kolkata Knight Riders, won the IPL in 2012. 2012 has also been a year of controversies for the actor. He was involved in a scuffle with Farah Khan’s husband Shirish Kunder in January 2012. Although the two patched up later on, the fight generated a lot of negative buzz for Khan. He was also involved in another fight with security guards at the Wankhede stadium during the Indian Premier League this year
He also completed 20 years in Hindi cinema in 2012. His film, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Yash Chopra’s last directorial debut, turned out to be one of the biggest hits of the year. The film, also starring Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, garnered much praise from the audiences. His next film isChennai Express with director Rohit Shetty, opposite Deepika Padukone.
